Frequently Asked Questions
What is an SLP assessment?
A Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) assessment is a comprehensive evaluation conducted to analyze and understand an individual's speech, language, communication, and swallowing abilities. It identifies areas of strength and difficulty, guiding the development of targeted intervention strategies.
Who can provide an SLP assessment?
Only certified Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), who are trained and licensed professionals, can conduct SLP assessments. They possess the expertise to assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, and communication disorders across all ages.
When (at what age) should I consider getting an SLP evaluation for my child?
An SLP evaluation can be beneficial at any age if there are concerns about speech, language, or communication development. Early assessment is particularly important, often recommended for children as young as 18 months if there are signs of language delay or disorder, to ensure timely intervention.
What distinguishes the "Early Language and Social Development Assessment" from the "Speech and Language Assessment"?
What An SLP assessment is a specialized evaluation conducted by a Speech-Language Pathologist to diagnose communication disorders, focusing on speech (articulation, fluency, voice) and language skills (receptive and expressive language). It involves standardized testing and observation to pinpoint specific areas that need therapeutic intervention. In contrast, an early language and social development assessment is broader, assessing a child’s progress across multiple developmental domains, including social skills, emotional regulation, cognitive abilities, and motor skills, alongside language.
Do your speech pathologists offer speech therapy?
The speech pathology team at All Brains is pleased to offer evidence-based family centered parent coaching in order to support your child’s communication needs. We occasionally offer the Hanen ‘More Than Words’ course, as well as individual coaching for families. We highly recommend parent coaching if your child is under 5 and has not yet started accessing speech therapy services in the community.
If your child is older there are many excellent clinics in the lower mainland who provide one-on-one and group-based intervention. Please speak with our team and we will be more than happy to provide further information specific to your child’s specific language goals.
Do you offer services for adults?
Yes! Our speech pathologists are happy to offer consulting for adults who wish to improve their social communication skills. For more information, please contact our team.

Speech and language assessments
Speech and language assessments serve as vital tools in deciphering and bolstering individuals' communication capabilities. These evaluations are geared towards pinpointing strengths and hurdles in speech production, language comprehension, and usage—essentials for learning, social interaction, and overall well-being. By furnishing a thorough overview of an individual's communication prowess, our team of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can devise tailored intervention strategies aimed at enriching effective communication.
The Need for Personalized Assessment
Communication is as diverse as the individuals it serves, spanning from articulating sounds to grasping intricate sentences and partaking in conversations. Our speech and language assessments are meticulously crafted to cater to the specific requirements and aspirations of each individual. Factors such as age, developmental stage, cultural background, and communication environment are taken into account, ensuring that our support strategies are pertinent, precise, and instrumental in fostering communication growth. Our assessment process encompasses a spectrum of tools and methodologies, including standardized tests, observations, interviews with parents/caregivers, and direct interaction with the individual. We scrutinize both spoken and, when applicable, written language for patterns in errors and strengths. Assessments may focus on expressive language (what the individual can say or write) and receptive language (understanding what is said or written), as well as speech sound production, voice quality, and fluency.
Advantages of Speech and Language Assessment
- Comprehensive Understanding: Our assessments delve deep into various facets of communication, encompassing phonology (sound patterns), morphology (word formation), syntax (sentence structure), semantics (meaning), and pragmatics (social language use). This holistic comprehension enables us to adopt a comprehensive approach to support.
- Fostering Academic and Social Success: Effective communication forms the bedrock of academic achievement and social integration. By identifying and tackling speech and language challenges early on, individuals are better prepared to thrive in educational settings and cultivate meaningful relationships.
A Collaborative Approach
Speech and language assessment is a collaborative endeavor involving the individual, family members, educators, and other professionals. This collaborative effort ensures that communication goals are aligned with the individual's overall development and integration into their community and educational settings.
Nurturing Communication and Connection
Speech and language assessments serve as gateways to understanding and enhancing communication skills, enabling individuals to express themselves effectively and connect with the world around them. Through meticulous evaluation, our SLPs play a pivotal role in supporting individuals to realize their full communication potential. As we continue to evolve our methodologies and leverage technological advancements, we unlock new avenues for enriching speech and language abilities, thereby empowering those we serve to engage fully in the fabric of human interaction.
